If I were a principal for a week

If I were a principal for a wee these would be the changes i would make:

1. I would make a field with rugby posts so people could play rugby and soccer by kicking the soccer ball under the post.

2.I would make a basketball and netball court so everyone can play their sport.

3. I would also make a hockey field attached to a part of the field with the right type of grass.

4. I would make the school bully free an fun.

Film Review

Today we went to the Toki Pounamu film festival and my favourite film was The Robbery, which  was the first film to come on and one of the best in my opinion. Most of them were pretty silent and even mine had a lot of silence.

The Robbery was a good film because of the effects and editing such as slow motion and  when they changed the setting without mistakes. The Robbery had a good plot and wasn't hard to follow. The sound quality was alright and they spoke clearly so we could hear them.

The bad thing about The Robbery was that in one part it just switched without explanation. I got confused the first time I watched it, but other than that it was the best film in my opinion.

I believe that all the films were great except that a couple were hard to understand but other than that all of them were good. My second favourite would have been mine but I didn't think it would be fair to review my own movie.

Next year i think they should give other people that didn't do one of the films a say to choose what films are going to be shown and maybe include a couple more films to be shown.

Callaghans ridge screencastify

WALT to embed screencastify onto our blog. Today we had to record a screencastify about some of our best work for digital literacy. I struggled with looking straight at the camera next time i will look at the camera. It was quicker to embed the screencastify than having to wait for it to download it.

Why are bees declining

Why are bees declining

Success Criteria:
We will plan and then write an information report on a topic of our choice related to bees.

Our report will:
  • Be interesting!
  • Give information about a topic of our choice related to bees.
  • Show a clear link to our planning.
  • Start with an opening statement about our topic.
  • Have at least 3 paragraphs.
  •   Each paragraph will have an opening statement and a series of facts related to that statement.
  • Include some complex or compound sentence structures.
  • Include at least one diagram, photograph, illustration or map to go with the text.
  • Finish with a general statement about the topic.
  • Use information from at least 3 different sources.
  • This information will be written in our own words and we will write down our sources at the
  • end of our report.

Bees are declining because of three reasons. In 1947 there were 6million hives and in 2008 there
were 2.4million hives. If the bees die the plants don't get pollinated and there will not be much food
such as bread, tomatoes, coffee, honey etc so here are the three reasons why.

Varroa mites
Varroa mites are the worst problem because they could wipe out a whole colony of bees.  They do this
by attaching to the adult bees and catch a feed and a ride to their hive. When they get to the hive they slip undetected into the vulnerable brood cells. This is where the bees lay there eggs and feed on the undeveloped bee.

Climate change
Climate change is another bad problem as it is causing habitat loss as bees are unable to migrate to
cooler areas and establish new hives. The other thing that climate change is doing is rising the
temperature so the flowers bloom earlier in the spring and creating potential mismatch in seasonal
timing. What this does is negatively affects bees health and making them less likely to reproduce and
easier to become pray.

Pesticides
Pesticides are chemicals that are used to kill pests but although this may sound good, pesticides
are killing the bees as well. How the bees die from pesticides is when the person using the pesticide
accidentally sprays it on the plants it stays there, and when the bees come along to pollinate it they
die too.

callaghans ridge

On Thursday the 11th of April room one and eight went on the Callaghans ridge day tramp. For the tramp we teamed up in groups my group consisted of Callan, Nathan k and I. Ms Kemp gave us a list of native birds and plants to find for example a fantail, a bell bird and a rata tree. Our classes were split into more groups to take in the cars. When we got there the drivers dropped us off at the start of the track and then they drove around to the end of the track, while they were doing this Ms Kemp explained all the dangers that we had talked about at school and all the native life. My group saw a bell bird and a Tomtit which were a part of the list. Two hours in we were walking down the track and marking things off. We all had a number to call out just in case we didn't lose anyone my number was 32. At lunch time we made a shelter to keep the rain out using a pocket knife a rope and a tarp. My team attached the tarp to a tree and made it so it sloped down so the rain would roll off. The finnish was at a campsite and everyone was soaking wet, some with mud over there face and some who had fallen over in the creek. The cars were all waiting for us and there was some sinks to clean our faces by the toilets. I really enjoyed going on the tramp for the day it was a lot of fun and im looking forward to the next one

beach cookout

On Wednesday the third of April room one and eight went to karoro beach next to the tasman sea.Room one and eight were split into teams to make the food my team consisted of Callan Sam Grace and Wairini. At school we had decided on steak and potatoes with banana split, chocolate sauce and mini marshmallows. To make the food the ingredients were bananas, mini marshmallows, potatoes and raw steak. First we split into groups in our team one had to find some wood and stones for the fire while the other group had to peel the potatoes and put them in tin foil. When we finished preparing the food we lit the fire with matches. Our team put a tray on the fire and then started cooking the steak. While the steak was cooking everyone was peeling the potatoes and putting them in tinfoil to stop them from burning.when we put them on and under the tray. When the potatoes were peeled and in tinfoil we put them under the tray and on top of the tray. 20 minutes later the steak and potatoes were cooked so we cut the potatoes into rectangular shapes and ate them with the steak. After we had eaten the steak and potatoes we put the bananas on the tray to cook. Five minutes after we had put the bananas on the tray they were cooked enough to eat so we put the chocolate sauce and the mini marshmallows in the middle of the banana where we cut. Once we had finished eating we collected water and poured it over the fire, once everyone's fire was out we packed up and walked back to karoro school.

lake daniells

On Wednesday the 12 of June rooms one and eight went on the Lake Daniells tramp. When we all got to school we talked about the risks of hypothermia with the adults and what could happen. Room one and eight got split into groups for the cars, the car ride took one hour and 30 minutes to get there and Jack and Ethan were in my car but Ethan was sick. At the carpark we got given numbers in case we went down the wrong track. One hour in the tramp we stopped and had something to eat by a tree. When we got to the lake we went on the wharf and ate lunch. When we went back me Nathan Nathan and Tyler were pretending that we saw bigfoot and we made an association called the bfa for short which stands for big foot association. On the way back we went straight through reefton while i was sleeping and stopped at kaiata park to get dinner at my dads work and we showed jack around the trucks. After we had got dinner we drove back to the school. It was around 6:30 when we got back to the school. I think it was a good experience and I would recommend the walk for anyone from the ages of nine and over.

bees are vips

One third of food relies on bees and they are one of the most important pollinators of food
crops. There won't be any of the plants that the bees pollinate and barely any food for the
animals.  For the flowers to attract the bees flowers produce sweet liquid nectar. When the
bees try to get to the nectar the pollen sticks on to them from the stamens. When the bees
go to another flower the pollen brushes off on the stigma. When this happens seeds are made.

Learning Intentions
We are learning to understand the importance of bees in nature through
learning about pollination and interdependence.
We are learning to take key information from an information report and
write it in our own words.
Writing task: Bee experts
Write a paragraph about how bees pollinate flowers.

The paragraph should:
  • Have a heading.
  • Have a minimum of four sentences.
  • Explain how bees pollinate flowers.
  • Tell us why this is important.
  • Be aimed for Miss Ireland’s class so they can understand this.
  • Be written in your own words.
  • Use your photo of your flower cut in half.
  • Use an additional photo or diagram if you wish.

lightning never strikes twice

WALT use adjectives and similes to describe a setting clearly
The windmill is dark as night when I run inside to hide, I find a torch but it has know batteries in it, I search around for some when unexpectedly I hear a crackle in the sky followed by a boom. The lightning is carrying fire after it drops on the green but dark grass it heads in a line towards the windmill and burns the door I see the fire witch is as blazing as the sun. I run up to the top of the windmill as fast as i can where i find batteries with stuff coming out of it from the lightning when i saw those batteries i knew there was lightning that had been there so i stood there hoping that the fire would go away hoping that the lightning would stop and then all of a sudden a strike of lightning comes faster then sound and lands right next to me when this happens twenty bricks fall down some of witch scrape my face and almost knock me out i climb out on the bricks that had fallen and jump out of the windmill i crawl away hoping to never come back there again i crawl all the way back to town and never saw that place since.
