marae recount

Powhiri

At the marae we had to stand outside the gates and sing he honore for a while until the tangata whenua/host opened the gate. Both of are classes were walking up to the marae while Miss Ireland did the karanga and the tangata whenua did them back we were walking stopped to think of all the ancestors that had died and then we walked into the wharenui.

Year 8 boys sat at the front with year 7 boys just behind them the middle row was empty except for one or two year 7 boys the  second to last  row was year 8 girls and the last row was year 7 girls. We all sang a waiata and then they sang one back. David(not Parsons)said all the maori stuff and then gave them a paper. What it was i don't know (maybe a check) after that we had to hongi the tangata whenua and went to get some kai.

  1. Sounds like it was a great honour for your class to attend the Marae Xavier. I know that you really enjoyed learning about the Marae and local Maori.
