Why are bees declining

Why are bees declining

Success Criteria:
We will plan and then write an information report on a topic of our choice related to bees.

Our report will:
  • Be interesting!
  • Give information about a topic of our choice related to bees.
  • Show a clear link to our planning.
  • Start with an opening statement about our topic.
  • Have at least 3 paragraphs.
  •   Each paragraph will have an opening statement and a series of facts related to that statement.
  • Include some complex or compound sentence structures.
  • Include at least one diagram, photograph, illustration or map to go with the text.
  • Finish with a general statement about the topic.
  • Use information from at least 3 different sources.
  • This information will be written in our own words and we will write down our sources at the
  • end of our report.

Bees are declining because of three reasons. In 1947 there were 6million hives and in 2008 there
were 2.4million hives. If the bees die the plants don't get pollinated and there will not be much food
such as bread, tomatoes, coffee, honey etc so here are the three reasons why.

Varroa mites
Varroa mites are the worst problem because they could wipe out a whole colony of bees.  They do this
by attaching to the adult bees and catch a feed and a ride to their hive. When they get to the hive they slip undetected into the vulnerable brood cells. This is where the bees lay there eggs and feed on the undeveloped bee.

Climate change
Climate change is another bad problem as it is causing habitat loss as bees are unable to migrate to
cooler areas and establish new hives. The other thing that climate change is doing is rising the
temperature so the flowers bloom earlier in the spring and creating potential mismatch in seasonal
timing. What this does is negatively affects bees health and making them less likely to reproduce and
easier to become pray.

Pesticides
Pesticides are chemicals that are used to kill pests but although this may sound good, pesticides
are killing the bees as well. How the bees die from pesticides is when the person using the pesticide
accidentally sprays it on the plants it stays there, and when the bees come along to pollinate it they
die too.
